First Day at School Preparation Checklist for Parents

Posted by Olli Smith

Whether your child is starting school for the first time or returning for another year, preparing them for this big day can help ease anxieties and set them up for success.

To make sure everything goes smoothly, we’ve put together a comprehensive checklist to help you prepare well in advance.

One Week Before School Starts: Plan and Shop

1. Shop for Essentials:
Now is the time to ensure your child has everything they need for the school year. This includes:

  • School Uniforms: Make sure they fit well and are comfortable.
  • School Supplies: Stock up on all necessary supplies like pencils, notebooks, and art materials.
  • Lunchbox and Water Bottle: Choose items that are easy for your child to open.
  • Training Pants (if needed): Ensure you have enough training pants or spare clothes.

2. Plan Healthy Meals:
A nutritious diet is essential for your child’s energy levels and concentration. Plan breakfasts and lunches that are healthy, easy to prepare, and enjoyable for your child. Stock up on easy-to-open snacks that they can manage independently.

3. Establish a Bedtime Routine:
If your child’s schedule has been relaxed over the holidays, start transitioning to an earlier bedtime. A good night’s sleep is crucial for a successful first day. Establish a calming bedtime routine that includes reading or quiet time.

4. Talk About School:
Start discussing the upcoming school year with your child. Talk about what they can expect, what they’re excited about, and any concerns they might have. This will help them mentally prepare and reduce any anxiety they may be feeling.

5. Practice the School Run:
If your child is attending a new school or the route has changed, practice the school run a few times. This will help your child feel more comfortable and confident on the first day.

A Few Days Before School Starts: Build Excitement and Final Preparations

1. Get Them Excited:
Talk about the fun aspects of school—making new friends, learning new things, and playing during break times. Arrange a playdate with school friends to rekindle those relationships.

2. Lay Out School Supplies:
Involve your child in packing their school bag. Let them help organise their supplies, so they know where everything is and feel prepared.

3. Finalise Bedtime Routine:
Stick to the new bedtime routine and ensure your child gets enough sleep. Have a conversation each night about what they’re looking forward to and address any last-minute concerns.

4. Check School Communication:
Review any communications from the school to ensure you’re aware of the first-day schedule, drop-off procedures, and any specific items your child needs to bring.

The Morning Of: A Calm and Organised Start

1. Wake Up Early:
Give yourself and your child plenty of time to get ready without rushing. A calm morning helps set a positive tone for the day.

2. Serve a Nutritious Breakfast:
Prepare a healthy breakfast that will keep your child energised and focused. Avoid sugary cereals and opt for balanced options like whole grains, fruits, and proteins.

3. Get Dressed and Ready:
Help your child get dressed in their school uniform or clothes. Make sure everything is comfortable and fits well, including shoes and socks.

4. Pack the School Bag:
Double-check that all essentials are packed—lunch, snacks, water bottle, and any special items. Ensure there’s a set of spare clothes or training pants if needed.

5. Bathroom Break:
Remind your child to use the toilet before leaving the house. This helps avoid any discomfort or accidents during the school day.

6. Keep Goodbyes Short and Positive:
A quick, reassuring goodbye at the school gate can help reduce any anxiety your child may feel. Remind them you’ll be excited to hear all about their day when they return.

After School: Reflect and Prepare for the Next Day

1. Talk About the Day:
Sit down with your child after school and ask open-ended questions about their day. What did they enjoy? Was there anything they found difficult? Listen to their experiences and offer reassurance.

2. Discuss Toilet Use:
Gently ask if they used the toilet at school and if they felt comfortable doing so. Remind them that it’s okay to ask their teacher if they need to go.

3. Praise Their Efforts:
Celebrate their successes, whether it’s making a new friend, trying something new, or simply getting through the day. Positive reinforcement can boost their confidence for the days ahead.

4. Prepare for the Next Day:
Lay out their clothes, pack their lunch, and ensure their school bag is ready for the next day. This routine helps them feel organised and reduces stress in the morning.

5. Maintain Bedtime Routine:
Stick to the bedtime routine, ensuring they get plenty of rest to recharge for the following day.
